To Kill a Shadow by Katherine Quinn is a Young Adult dark romantasy gem。 The Pacing for both world building and character development was handled perfectly and the writing style was so evocative that I felt as though I had fallen into the pages。 I can not wait to get my hands on a physical copy for my personal collection and to get some copies on our store shelves so others can experience this work。

I was lucky enough to receive an eArc copy of this book, and when I tell you it gripped me from the start it really did。 I love the relationship between Ki and Liam, and the hunger games vibes at the very beginning really drew me in and kept my interest。 There were so many twists and turns, especially towards the end and none of them I saw coming。 I had a few guesses but of course I wasn’t correct, and that just made the outcome even more gripping。 I cannot wait for book 2!

I couldn't put this book down and read it in one go。 The main characters Kiara and Jude are two outsiders (with a lot of baggage) who are drawn to each other against their will and form a special bond。 Add complex worldbuilding, found family, some horror, a deadly mist, and many twists and turns, and you have an intriguing dark fantasy story。 I can't wait for the sequel, because that cliffhanger。。。wow。 I got this arc in exchange for an honest review。 I couldn't put this book down and read it in one go。 The main characters Kiara and Jude are two outsiders (with a lot of baggage) who are drawn to each other against their will and form a special bond。 Add complex worldbuilding, found family, some horror, a deadly mist, and many twists and turns, and you have an intriguing dark fantasy story。 I can't wait for the sequel, because that cliffhanger。。。wow。 I got this arc in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Kiara is an outcast when she’s chosen to join the Knights by the Hand of Death, Jude。 With a kingdom on the brink of collapse, they’re tasked with delving into the mist in search of salvation。 However, it’s not that simple。 The mist is out to mess with their minds, and there are beasts living in the shadows。 Although, when death is the only other option, they have no choice but to fight。✨✨To Kill a Shadow is my first read by Quinn and it certainly will not be the last。 This book was phenomenal - Kiara is an outcast when she’s chosen to join the Knights by the Hand of Death, Jude。 With a kingdom on the brink of collapse, they’re tasked with delving into the mist in search of salvation。 However, it’s not that simple。 The mist is out to mess with their minds, and there are beasts living in the shadows。 Although, when death is the only other option, they have no choice but to fight。✨✨To Kill a Shadow is my first read by Quinn and it certainly will not be the last。 This book was phenomenal - equal parts creepy, hopeful, and full of mind blowing twists and heartbreaking betrayals。 Seriously, the emotions Quinn brings out during this story will give you whiplash。 It’s that good。 The world building and magic system are well developed and explored throughout the story。 While those certainly add to the overall success, the character development and relationships really perfect the tale。 Kiara’s ability to open up after everything she’s been through is remarkable。 The found family trope is expertly used as part of her character development。 Additionally, her relationship with Jude is mutually beneficial in terms of character development。 They’re able to push each other to become better versions of themselves。 Not to mention the chemistry between the two is intense。 The side characters also add an interesting dynamic to Kiara’s personality。 Be warned, the last few chapters will have your head spinning and demanding the next book in the series。 I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book。✨✨eARC courtesy of netgalley and entangled teen 。。。more

To find the three keys mentioned in a prophecy, which would allow the Fog to disappear。 I wouldn't want to be there, I tell you: more than once I've shuddered at the morbid, cruel or frightening scenes 😱Will the Knights find the keys again? Who will emerge from the Fog unscathed? Do Jude and Kiara stand a chance? The answer in To Kill a Kingdom, on 28 November! 😬 。。。more

Overall I really enjoyed this book。 I'm always a fan of a strong and sassy FMC and a broken and brooding MMC。 As genre's go I would say it fits in the forbidden love category and maybe found family。 There might be others, but I can't think of them right now。 It definitely qualifies as YA in regards to spice。 There are hints of things but not anything more than that。 The premise is unique in that this is a world where the sun god has disappeared and they all live by the light of the moon alone。 O Overall I really enjoyed this book。 I'm always a fan of a strong and sassy FMC and a broken and brooding MMC。 As genre's go I would say it fits in the forbidden love category and maybe found family。 There might be others, but I can't think of them right now。 It definitely qualifies as YA in regards to spice。 There are hints of things but not anything more than that。 The premise is unique in that this is a world where the sun god has disappeared and they all live by the light of the moon alone。 Obviously in real life this would be impossible, but in a world with gods, anything is possible! I mean, that's why I read books like this, to escape reality! There are so many twists and turns in this book that I feel like I can't speak too much about what happens without a spoiler warning。 This book is very dark, and not just because there's no sun。 Violence and gore are prevalent throughout the book, but I find it pretty easy to minimize the gore when I imagine in my mind, the beauty of reading! I thought I had figured out some of the twists but while I was partially right I totally missed several of the major reveals! I love that in a book, I love to be surprised! Even worse was as soon as the main character learns his name, which is Jude, every time she thinks of him or mentions him, she has to go 'Ju--Commander Maddox'。 It happened more than three times。 We get it。 The men (and lady) chosen for this clearly are supposed to be trained or prepared for the mists, but instead, they are just 'threat-told' that the mists will take no prisoners and subject you to your worst fears。。。 You are also treated to moments of the female lead asserting her 'I WANT TO BEAT PEOPLE UP, LET ME DO IT NOW SO I CAN SHOW HOW TOUGH I AM' moments which lead no actual training or insight on how this will help with creatures and feelings that may be found in said mists。 There are also moments where the female lead is cornered by men who hate her and want to take her down a notch only to be beat up by Commander Maddox, leaving her some kind of stuttering, shy mess。I had to laugh at one point when they finally get to do something - a training exercise - with a creature that was found in the mists。 It's lurking in a moat below the castle。 It takes ahold of one of the men, she jumps in there to save him and ends up getting wounded。 Commander Maddox sees this, cradles her, takes her to the baths and submerges her into warm water to 。。。 wake her up? He then yells at her telling her that she was reckless and she should have stayed away from doing such a thing。 。。。 Why。 This was a test, a clear test to see how they would handle themselves in the mist and obviously she was going to save someone。 But apparently when it comes to her the Commander wants to protect her and keep her away from asserting her female dominance。 So, finally around the 40% mark it's time to go into the mists。 Apparently they are looking for an item that is to stop the mists from taking over the kingdom。 But it can only be found inside the mist? The Commander has been told by the king that our female lead (because she has the need for bloodshed) needs to get in there and be one of the four chosen。 The Commander freaks out (because of feelings) and keeps her from being chosen。 This angers her and she makes her distaste known with a god-awful almost romantic tinged spat of being denied time in the mist。 When they leave to go, she sneaks away too and is caught by him。We finally get to some mist action, but it's so poorly done and at 50% I knew I had to stop。 I was looking for something tension filled (due to hype regarding the mists and again, the hype of Evil Dead)。 Nope。 Poorly executed and lacking any sort of fear or threat。As I look at the reviews for this so far, they're not very detailed nor do they give compelling reasons of why this book is worth a read to someone who may be interested。 I like romance in fantasy too (maybe not romantasy), but being my first official one, I thought to give it a try。 I had to tap out。So, if you enjoy books that lack subtlety, character, and suffer from poor romance and ill attempts at conflict and fear, this is your book。 I struggle to think how romance fans could enjoy this too, since the romance is so poor or not on level of that you'd even find in a YA book。 。。。more
